The dictionary explanation of respect is a feeling or understanding that someone or something is important, serious, etc.. and should be treated in an appropriate way.
I say that respect is the feeling you should always show when you meet someone new or are introduced to something new. Accept and learn about your differences, strengthens, weakness, and beliefs, before making your opinion on the person or situation. This is showing respect to a new opportunity or adventure in life that has been presented to you.
Respect is always good to show to everyone around you, even if you don't feel the person or situation merits it. This is what many call the high road. You can still make your position and feeling be very well known to others, without disrespecting. We have all grown to let out our feelings right away and you can see where that has gotten us. So, now when your anger, feelings, or attitude starts to create negative energy around you, breathe a deep breath, blow it out and rethink what is happening around you. Start respecting yourself (because you don't want to go there) and respecting those around you. Change from reaction to creative action so that everyone comes out for the best.
If you are in a heated discussion, don't think your's is the only idea that is right. As a community we make our rules to have everyone feel comfortable and accepted. What is best collectively overrules the opinion of just one. Respect the others in your social community as equals. Others may be more knowing, others may have more experience, some may know nothing, but everyone has a right to be heard. And remember that not everyone lives your way, believes your way or should they have to.
When I teach, my first statement to my class is that I am teaching you "my" truths, these are the things I believe in, how I live my life. I am not saying this is the one true truth, I am saying this is my path, if it feels good to you take from it what ever you want. But please respect my path and I will respect yours.
